Sunday 18th February, Smash IPP infonight!

As anarchists, we often have aims that seem unachieveable. A truly peaceful and democratic society? Maybe not in my lifetime. But sometimes there are differences that we can make. So if you’re tired of fighting uphill battles, Smash IPP has an idea for you. Thousands of people are serving IPP sentences with no release dates in UK jails. The law that put them inside indefinitely has been abolished, but they’re still in there, with the uncertainty having such a devastating effect on their mental health that over 50% of them self-harm. Come to Kebele Community Centre in Easton at 7pm after dinner to find out more about these forgotten prisoners and how you can help with the 2017 year to free all IPPs! We don’t see this as incongruent with our aims of prison abolition, more as a reduction of harm to vulnerable people. Anything that reduces the power and reach of the prison-industrial complex is fine by us.

Monthly letter writing is back!

On the 1st Sunday of the month, starting this Sunday 5th of February, Bristol ABC will be at Kebele during dinner with prisoner lists, writing materials and advice. Come and join us in writing to established friends and making new ones!

Letter writing is an often undervalued way of building links with those struggling inside the prison walls. Let them know we haven’t forgotten them and are fighting for them outside!

In May 2015, the state began Operation Fenix, a campaign of repression against anarchists and liberatory activists. Dozens of people were arrested and interrogated, websites were taken down, computers seized, houses raided.

Now, 18 months later, the Czech state’s campaign of terror has not ended, but neither has the campaign of solidarity and unity of the radical movement in the face of this repression.

Come to Kebele on the 30th of October, after Sunday dnner, and learn about how people have stayed strong and supported each other, and what we can do to support them in our turn. There will be a member of the antirepression group Antifenix speaking, so don’t miss out on this chance to come along and hear about it firsthand!

Dinner and infonight in solidarity with US national prison strike

On the 8th of September we are having a fundraising dinner and infonight in solidairty with striking workers who are fighting against the slavery of the United States prison industrial complex.

Come to Kebele Community Centre, 14 Roberstson Road, BS5 6JY, at 6.30 pm on Thursday the 8th of September for food and to find out more about their struggle. There will be a discussion with the importance of prisoner solidarity and the need for prisoners’ unions with Bristol ABC and members of the  Incarcerated Workers’ Organising Committee, who are involved in assisting with the prison strike from the outside in the US.

In the words of prisoners involved in the strike:

Slavery is alive and well in the prison system, but by the end of this year, it won’t be anymore. This is a call to end slavery in America. This call goes directly to the slaves themselves. We are not making demands or requests of our captors, we are calling ourselves to action. To every prisoner in every state and federal institution across this land, we call on you to stop being a slave, to let the crops rot in the plantation fields, to go on strike and cease reproducing the institutions of your confinement.

This is a call for a nation-wide prisoner work stoppage to end prison slavery, starting on September 9^th, 2016. They cannot run these facilities without us.

Bristol ABC will be celebrating the current prisoner art exhibition at Kebele this Sunday. The artwork is by artists who either have been or are currently behind bars. We are also proud to present the Bristol segment of the European speaking tour by Antii Rautiainen, a Finnish anarchist from Moscow who will talk about the Russian anarchist movement, it’s successes and failures.

There will be great music, projections, audio art installations and more…

June 11th: Solidarity with long-term anarchist prisoners @ Kebele

As part of the international day of solidarity on June 11th:
Bristol ABC presents an infonight/benefit evening  for long-term U.S. anarchist prisoners Eric McDavid & Marie Mason. We will be sharing food, discussing the latest on Eric & Marie’s case and watching a short documentary on Jeff “Free” Luers.

8:00pm: Film screening of ‘The Jeff Luers Story‘ (40 mins).

Marie Mason is a long-time environmental and social justice activist and loving mother of two. In March 2008, she was arrested on charges related to Earth Liberation Front actions that occurred in Michigan in 1999 and 2000; no one was injured in the actions. On February 5, 2009, Marie received an outrageous 262 month sentence (a little under 22 years). The sentence was higher than even that asked for by federal prosecutors. Marie’s sentence is the longest given to any “Green Scare” defendant to date.

 In September 2007, Eric McDavid was found guilty of conspiracy to sabotage federal facilities in the name of the environment. The government’s case was based on the word of an FBI informant who was paid over $75,000 to fabricate a crime. Both of Eric’s co-defendants testified against Eric in return for a lesser charge. On May 8, 2008, Eric was sentenced to an outrageous 19 years and 7 months in prison for a crime that was never committed. Eric is appealing his conviction

Having attended over 110 screenings in America, Mexico, Canada and Japan Franklin López will continue his world tour in the UK this April his film END:CIV (http://endciv.com/)

END:CIV illustrates the brutality of a civilization addicted to systematic violence and environmental destruction, and the heroism of those who confront it head-on.

Through rapid-fire video-game graphics, interviews, war footage and satire END:CIV mocks the excesses of the global economic system, and examines the necessity for effective resistance.

As the UK is beginning to experience more frequent environmental crises resulting from climate change and a history of poor environmental management this film will be instrumental in bringing awareness of the need to confront the system which allows this destruction to continue.

After the screening Franklin will answer questions relating to the film and ask those present to consider what action they are prepared to take to save the landbase they rely on to survive.
